i wish i could wrap myself up in you
like a blanket that i saved all year
in the closet at the end of the hall
you're soft and warm and covered in dog's fur
the intricate designs, the colors and the lines
someone had a lot of love when they made you
i wish i could dive so deep into you
you're the blackest sea, in the dead of the night
i see my reflection bouncing in your waves
so i dive right in, feel the cold water
beating down on my chest
but i open my mouth and let more of you in
and feel the weight begin to drag me down
like the star light i drown
i wish i could get lost in a forest with you
traipse over brush, the flesh of the air
dips warm around our toes the earth becoming shoes
under the sky, the mouth of the night
breathing warm and discreet
i planted your feet, under the soil
a wish to give you roots
and watch you grow
i wish

he might have been willing
to burn the whole world
to feel warm for a little while
but I will swallow the sky, the stars and their light
to bathe my eyes in their fire
(the endless void)
Passing thru the periphery
above the trees
I wanted to connect with
the natural world
that I had no chance
to fathom or control
but you are those trees
(the lumbering giants)
you are the leaves and the bramble
the colors fade and return with season
the branches divide the blue of the sky
and create patterns
(I am writing these songs for you
so you feel something
because I feel everything
now that I have, open heart)

(I think about you more than I should
it's not good for me
I've upended my life to stay alive
I chewed off limbs to climb through the bars
and open my eyes in the night)
the great void
opened up
and swallowed the air
and left me
here in this vacuum
I think about you more than I should
I prayed you'd venture out into my void
and sail across my waters
A wayward ship, made for war and peace
does this even make sense?
(Or am I just biting my tongue to taste blood
or to keep myself from singing, these songs
I think about you)

So you're going back to Japan
to visit your folks
and wander around
Well I fantasized for years, about my own trip to those islands
Plotted courses around the cities and prefectures
I wanted to drown, I wanted to get lost in it
in the maple leaves, and red cranes
I see you on a plane, landing in a place
you used to live in
saying hi and all that
to your family
then you're floating along, above the mountain tops
and the mist
and the fog
that you grew up in
and continue to grow
I just wanted you to know
so here's to the hope
that you come back, but if you don't
if you can't
("I wanted to be,
like Jomon Sugi
A grim titan
More rock than timber.")

(You're wild and free and insane
dark and dusty on a desert night
free fallin'
surrounded by barking dogs
singing songs nobody has heard
familiar melodies wrapped around
your vocal cords
squeezing out vibrations
so i keep writing
hoping to hear one of those songs
you're wild and free and insane
a shadow dancing along my wall
hoping to go unnoticed
so you can seep back into your darkness)

We drove out past the sun, where the horses slept
among the thorns of a dusty deserted road
at the end of Speedway
The night brought the cold, the windy blew and burned my nose
We began the walk, through the trees
the barrel cactus, and saguaro arms
hearing voices in the wind
The light from the lantern I brought lit the way
So I turned the dial, the be blind for awhile
but the moon, chased the darkness away
A sickle in the sky, cut through the night
and it felt warm for awhile
A small bed of heat, crept through my feet
and it's warmth engulfed my hands in their fire
The flames led us here, the great cliff over of the valley
We stared into the deep, canyons of sleep
the darkness made them feel so endless
We sat upon the rocks under the light of your moon
and your voice echoed through my head like a tomb
at the bottom of this endless valley
I turned my head to admire the red of your hair
A small flush of a deep mahogany sheen
The same color as the fire I was holding
And the burning never stops it's just growing

(I like the way you smell
the vanilla breezes past and breathes into my nose)
I like the fact that your lips are always chapped
like canyons I want to dive so deep into
(I like how you forget to eat
Forcing yourself to bite the inside of your perfect cheek)
I like how my brain has to work ten times harder when I'm around you
to keep my ship afloat amongst the storm of your waters
(I like you)

The other day I was driving down I-10
On my way to Phoenix to see a show
And in the distance I saw a silhouette
the mighty cliffs of Picacho Peak
and in its shadow
(I thought of you)
It's been 3 days since I saw you
A ghost floating through the room
In this house I knew was abandoned
Except for the revelry once a year
and in our shared laughter
(I thought of you)
Memories like these are fleeting
they come to me despite the lack of permission
I keep telling myself to throw earth on this fire
But the flames grew and kept me warm
and in my soft burning
(I thought of you)
I borrowed this melody from an artist
who consistently dives into the deep
the canyons and the caves, the fog over the graves
answering questions we always forget to ask
until it's too late
and in my short explorations
(I thought of you)
